Becareful when running those recently purchased Audio-CD's from the computer...

GeekLogIt seems that some newly distributed Sony Music Cd's come with a type of copy protection that installs 'Rootkits" on your system. Basically when you put in a music CD that has this protection, a program gets automatically installed and continuously runs in the background. Currently this is not a serious threat but it can potentially lead to remote exploitation and/or system instability.

GeekLogHere is a list of excellent security practices for both the novice and expert internet user.

1) Separate User Accounts -- By having separate user accounts, it is believed that one can segment your sensitive activities in one account, and then switch accounts for general use.

2) Delete Internet History -- I do this regularly, though I am not sure if it is out of paranoia or to just free up disk space on my hard drive but it may help in some instances.

new Varients of Bagle and Sober viruses out

General NewsA few new varients of viruses and worms are out this week. You may have seen emails (with attachments) offering free tickets for the 2006 World Cup, Osama Capture pics or warnings of having your email account cancelled. Ignore all these emails and update your virus definitions!

As usual, these viruses are attached to messages as zip files. Obviously you should not open these emails.
